Somma Christmas  2014 - I asked mom to tell me about the ornaments on her Christmas tree. She pointed to several of them and shared the history of each one.  I went home that evening and wrote this.  

‘I realized 
It's not just a tree 
As she shared
its history 

A simple cone
Once filled with candy
Holds sweet memories
Of how life used to be

A silver bell
40 years old
A favorite of her youngest
I am told 

A knitted tree
From her middle one
She proudly points
To where it's hung

White House ornaments
She holds so dear
From her oldest 
Received each year

At least 
Three quarters of a century
Has Santa sat 
On the tree 

Generations of memories
And stories shared
As we gather
This time of the year.’
